As the favorite MLB player that I met on my wedding day, Manny Ramirez holds a special place of interest to me. So, hearing that he was back on the trading block piqued my GM instincts.
As I thought about it, there seemed to be only one fair trade scenario.
The Red Sox send Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers in exchange for...
Andruw Jones.
That's obvious, right? The Sox need an OF in return - one with the potential to be awesome. Obviously, Andruw hasn't been that great this year but... well, yeah. You want to get rid of a problem, you probably have to take one back.
But I'll sweeten the pot for you.
I'll toss in longtime Boston fan favorite, Nomar Garciaparra.

Almost There
Don't look now but the Dodgers are suddenly just barely out of the top spot in their division despite one of the worst starts I can remember. They're still under .500 but they seem to be coming around a bit lately. They could be on the verge of breaking through.
There still is a lot of health issues to work through. Penny's out til at least the break. Furcal's getting back surgery that could potentially end his season. Nomar and Andruw are fresh off injury rehabs which means we don't know what we can expect out of him. Kuroda's coming off an injury. Lots of questions that need to be worked through and soon.
I'm glad to see they dropped out of the Sabathia race. As much as people think the Dodgers need that losing streak-snapping ace, I don't want to see names like Billingsley and Kemp shipped out for him. I'm okay with a starting rotation of a couple #2 starters and change. Very few teams in baseball have that legitimate ace so that should be the least of their concerns - especially with such an amazing first half performance from the staff.
Right now, it's all offense - clutch offense especially. I think the tools are in place for the most part. It's just a matter of luck and maturation to get over that next hurdle. Personally, I hope Coletti stands pat unless he can make minor upgrades at low costs. I have faith in the core of players they put together to work their shit out and come together.
It looks like it won't take a world-beater to get into the playoffs from the NL West - and once you're in, anything can happen. Just ask the Rockies. Now's the time to make the move though. Keep pushing hard and get over the top.

Doubie Posting Wednesday
Just thought I'd drop some more verbage on you before heading out for the Kate Nash show in Hollywood tonight.
In case you haven't noticed, somewhere on the right side of the page, there is now a section where I can leave behind some newsbits that I think you all might enjoy. And I have done so!
To help promote that cool little feature, I thought I'd take a few of those newsbits and give you some thought patterns on them.
NEWS: KCRW Launches Guest DJ Project
THOUGHT PATTERN: That's pretty fucking sick. I don't get to listen to KCRW very much except for their killer Today's Top Tune podcast that you really should be listening to but I do appreciate their efforts to introduce new music to this desolate wasteland of good musical taste that we call the United States. One of the things that I first dug about Indie 103 and that got me listening to them was their efforts to use DJs that were "unusual." Henry Rollins, the Camp Freddy boys, Dicky from the Bosstones, etc. So, the idea of someone like Danny Devito hosting a show on KCRW is pretty boss. Good idea, KCRW! Keep the morning eclectic!
NEWS: Dodgers' Blake DeWitt for ROY?
THOUGHT PATTERN: With his numbers climbing, he's gotta be getting some consideration but the concern remains true - what happens when Nomar comes back? It just seems unbelievable to me that someone doing so well and who is the future of the team will be shoved aside for someone who definitely is the past of the team. I really like Nomar but he needs to be used in a utility/supersub position now. His days as an everyday starter seem to be behind him. Of course, the one monkey in this particular wrench... what about Andy LaRoche? Did LaRoche gets Wally Pipped or does he still stand a shot at grabbing the position that he was the heir apparent to for so very long? Like sands through the hourglass...
NEWS: EliteXC expects sellout for May 31st show
THOUGHT PATTERN: You gotta be shittin' me. They think they're going to fill a 15,000+ seat arena based off Kimbo Slice's name alone? If they manage to pull that off without papering the crowd, I will swallow crow and admit that Kimbo's a hell of a bigger draw than I gave him credit for. For me, the lineup just doesn't look very good. It's another freak show lineup with EXC praying the public will tune in because a] it's free and b] it's got Kimbo and Gina Carano on the show. While that's good enough for me and for the majority of MMA fans, I'm sure, you have to wonder if that's enough for the "general public." And you DEFINITELY have to wonder if it's enough to sell out that building.

THOUGHT PATTERN: Remember that time you Googled "Miley Cyrus topless photos" looking for those Vanity Fair pics that everyone was talking about? No? LIAR! Well, thanks to the good folks at Charter Communications, soon everyone will know that you performed that search and just what porn sites you ventured to blindly looking for said photos. And as a result? You're probably going to get some very targeted porn ads sent your way. Awesome! Ain't the lethal combination of American business practices and intrusive technology grand?

THOUGHT PATTERN: Oh god. Just reading the headline makes me queasy. But there's really no way around it. You don't want him to NOT play because injured or not, I bet the Lakers stand a better chance of winning if he plays than they do if he sits. At the same time, the haunting memories of badly shot jumpers in the 4th quarter from Sunday will not leave my mind until we're out of this round... and probably not even then. A lot of people say that a series really doesn't start until someone wins on the road... that puts the Lakers in a must-win scenario tonight as they haven't proved they can win in Utah this post-season yet. MUST WIN. Phil better write that on the board tonight. Game 6 is going to be a bitch... and having the pressure of being an elimination game is something the Lakers DO NOT need. Game on, Laker fans... game on.

It's always nice to be able to fulfill a request for a topic, right? Right!
So, how about the weekend the Dodgers had?
In case you were in baseball seclusion soaking up the insanity of the NBA Playoffs this past weekend, here's a sample of the bizarre weekend series the Rockies and Dodgers had.
*** The never-ending saga of Nomar Garciaparra and his on-again/off-again torrid love affair with the disabled list continued when he strained a calf muscle in the ninth inning, the same injury that ended his season early last year. While it's sad and/or frustrating to see him go down injured again after just getting off the DL, well... it's Nomar... so what did you expect really? But the two things that resulted because of this injury were far more interesting.
1] Rookie Blake DeWitt was sent down to AAA on Thursday so that he could get regular playing time. His "minutes" had dropped drastically since the return of Nomar from the DL [the first time] so they sent him down to get him steady work. He played on Friday for the Las Vegas 51s, the Dodgers' AAA affiliate. After the game, the 51s gathered in their lounge to watch the big club's game. When Nomar went down, the 51s manager advised DeWitt to hang around and sure enough, the call came. After a less than 24 hour stint back in AAA, the rookie was on his way back to The Show. I love this game.
2] When DeWitt was sent down to AAA, legendary Dodger announcer Vin Scully had speculated several times on the "nightmare scenario." With DeWitt back in AAA, the Dodgers really didn't have a backup 3B if Nomar happened to go down. And since this is Dodgers baseball, you could be almost certain that it would happen. And when it did, what did Joe Torre do to earn his high salary? He walked up to Catcher Russell Martin and asked him what IF position he could play. Thus, Dodger fans got the bizarre sight of Russell Martin in the dugout frantically trying to find a 3B mitt before taking the position for the first time since A ball. As a side note to this, Martin leaving his normal position brought in Dodger backup catcher Gary Bennett... who promptly just flat out missed the first pitch thrown to him, bringing the tying run across the plate and sending the game to extra innings. And to top it all off, Third Baseman Russell Martin got the sac fly in the 13th to give the Dodgers the win.
** With a game like that on Friday night, it couldn't get much weirder on Saturday, right? Well, as Vin Scully would say, "before the seats were warm" the Dodgers erupted for a 10 run bottom of the first inning including the first ever career Grand Slam for Matt Kemp.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!

Crazy, right? The guy's okay so we can all laugh about it now. Well, maybe not... but sweet Jesus, that must have hurt.
** Okay, so a crazy Friday... a weird Saturday... Sunday must have been normal, right?
WRONG!

But the Dodgers won on a James Loney seeing-eye single in the 10th to give them their first sweep of the year and their first three-game win streak.
It's been a long and painful April for the Dodgers but they're oh-so-close to coming out of it in second place and over .500. Keep it up, boys! It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Top Five Friday
Looks like we're going out tonight so I can't procrastinate and do this posting at 11:50 PM tonight to "just beat deadline."
I had a hard time trying to pick a topic this week since I felt like I should do something both baseball related and wrestling related since Wrestlemania is this weekend and the Dodgers open up on Monday [plus have the big game at the Coliseum tomorrow night against the Red Sox.]
But since I still intend to write something about Wrestlemania this weekend, I give you...
My Top 5 Memorable Moments In Dodgers History.
Let me preface this by saying it has to be an event that I actually remember happening [preferably hearing or seeing.] This rules out things like Fernandomania in '81, Bob Welch striking out Reggie Jackson, etc. Also, I reserve the right to change this list every day for the rest of my life.
Here we go...
5. BACK TO BACK TO BACK TO BACK
Who can forget it? Bottom of the 9th in mid September. Dodgers down by four. the Padres opt to not bring in Hoffman with a 4 run lead. I remember being so pissed at the Dodgers at that point, barely watching the game while it was on. It starts simple enough. Jeff Kent hits a solo shot. Hey, that's cool. Too little, too late, right? J.D. Drew up next... he does the same. Well, that's interesting. The Pads bring in Hoffman at that point and I figure that'll do it. Russell Martin is next and there goes another solo shot. At this point, I'm stunned. I haven't seen three HRs in a row in... well, maybe ever. I'm intrigued as Marlon Anderson comes to the plate. Not like there's any chance of- holy fucking shit. 4 HRs in a row to tie the game in the 9th. And the Dodgers go on to win on a walk-off homerun by Nomar in extra innings. Four HRs in a row - something that hadn't happen in over 40 years. Absolutely amazing.
By the by, I REALLY wanted the 4 in a row for the video here but... well, this was damn cool too.
4. LIMA TIME
Okay, this one REALLY rocks for me because I was there. To set the stage, the Dodgers are at home against the Cardinals in the 2004 playoffs. The Dodgers have not won a playoff game since 1988. The fans are sick with the idea that they're about to get swept out of the playoffs again. Enter Jose Lima - a journeyman pitcher who had managed to win the hearts of Dodgers fans with his crazy antics and intense spirit. Lima manages to throw a five-hitter of electrifying baseball to shut down the Cards and give the Dodgers one more chance. Of course, they failed - but I still get this game to remember. Oh, and Mrs. Blue almost blinded me for life by hitting me in the eye with a rally towel at one point.
3. FINLEY WITH THE SLAM
Ahhhh, yes. In 2004, the Dodgers went into the final game of the season with one more chance to win the division and get into the playoffs. As you can tell from above, it happened... but how it happened was another Dodger moment nothing short of legendary. The Dodgers were bad that day... so bad that they entered the 9th inning against the arch-rival Giants down by seven runs. Things looked bad... real bad. But they chipped away and away and away, aided by some fielding troubles by the Giants and found themselves suddenly with the bases loaded and a victory within one swing of the bat. The man taking that swing? Steve Finley. And one swing later, the Dodgers were in the playoffs in one of the most unbelievable scenes ever witnessed in Dodger Stadium.
I kinda dig these videos taken from the crowd. This one actually gave me chills at the slam itself - just took a little while to get there.
2. HERSHISER BEATS DRYSDALE
Ahhh, memories. Orel Hershiser closing out the 1988 season by cementing his Cy Young campaign by going for the consecutive scoreless innings streak - a record held by then-Dodgers broadcaster Don Drysdale. Drysdale was actually in the dugout as Hershiser took the mound with one more inning to go until the record was his. It was as special of a moment as you can imagine.
1. IN THE YEAR OF THE IMPROBABLE, THE IMPOSSIBLE HAS HAPPENED!
Like there's any doubt what was going to be number one. I can't do this justice. All I can add to the video below is I was an 11 year old kid jumping around my living room, leaping off of couches, and it's one of the best memories of my life. Thanks, Gibby.
And for a little bit of the "lighter side" of this moment...

One Week
As I once again race to beat "the deadline" so I can continue the streak, I'm looking for a nice, simple topic to write about so I don't have to think too much.
With that in mind, we find ourselves approximately seven days from two of my favorite days of the year.
Next Sunday will be Wrestlemania - always a holiday for me. The price has gone up yet again and the show doesn't have a lot of the same flair [no pun intended] that it has in past years but there is still plenty about it that I'm looking forward to. I'll probably do a little more thorough rundown later in the week so I don't want to burn all that up right now but I will say that I almost feel bad for Shawn Michaels heading into next Sunday. He's been put into one of the toughest positions imaginable where he needs to figure out a way to work his Wrestlemania magic and give Ric Flair a final match that no one will ever forget. It won't be easy... Flair hasn't had a truly memorable match in quite some time. But it will be a huge moment one way or the other.
Next Monday will be the Dodgers Opening Day. And with seven days to go til the 2008 season opens at home, the Dodgers _still_ have a lot of questions to be answers for their team. As short-term problems, they need to figure out if Jeff Kent will be ready for Opening Day and if not, who will take his spot [my money is on Abreu although Marcus Giles got cut today and immediately becomes a dark horse candidate for me.] Nomar appears to be missing Opening Day and LaRoche is sidelined for a month or so more after that. My guess is that Hu and Abreu will double up at the hot corner until Nomar is ready to go. We still need a fifth starter which has settled into a battle between Park and Loaiza. My gut still stays Loaiza gets the gig because of his contract but Park has pitched well enough to earn a shot... if not in Dodger Blue, somewhere else in the big leagues. All signs are that Kuo and Young will both make the squad because they're out of minor league options - meaning we either keep them with the big club or risk losing them to another team via waivers. That'll make for quite the roster crunch. Supposedly, we should expect some big cuts tomorrow so it'll be interesting to see who is left standing.

With that in mind, we find ourselves approximately seven days from two of my favorite days of the year.
Next Sunday will be Wrestlemania - always a holiday for me. The price has gone up yet again and the show doesn't have a lot of the same flair [no pun intended] that it has in past years but there is still plenty about it that I'm looking forward to. I'll probably do a little more thorough rundown later in the week so I don't want to burn all that up right now but I will say that I almost feel bad for Shawn Michaels heading into next Sunday. He's been put into one of the toughest positions imaginable where he needs to figure out a way to work his Wrestlemania magic and give Ric Flair a final match that no one will ever forget. It won't be easy... Flair hasn't had a truly memorable match in quite some time. But it will be a huge moment one way or the other.
Next Monday will be the Dodgers Opening Day. And with seven days to go til the 2008 season opens at home, the Dodgers _still_ have a lot of questions to be answers for their team. As short-term problems, they need to figure out if Jeff Kent will be ready for Opening Day and if not, who will take his spot [my money is on Abreu although Marcus Giles got cut today and immediately becomes a dark horse candidate for me.] Nomar appears to be missing Opening Day and LaRoche is sidelined for a month or so more after that. My guess is that Hu and Abreu will double up at the hot corner until Nomar is ready to go. We still need a fifth starter which has settled into a battle between Park and Loaiza. My gut still stays Loaiza gets the gig because of his contract but Park has pitched well enough to earn a shot... if not in Dodger Blue, somewhere else in the big leagues.
